Percentage formulas explained

"Per cent" means "out of 100", so 25% is 25 out of every 100, or one quarter. Percentages make it easy to compare numbers of different sizes — a 10% discount means the same thing on a ₹500 shirt and a ₹50,000 phone.

X% of Y is X ÷ 100 × Y. For example, 18% of ₹2,500 is 18 ÷ 100 × 2,500 = ₹450. Use it for tips, tax, commission or a share of a bill.

X as a percentage of Y is X ÷ Y × 100. This is how marks percentages are worked out: 432 marks out of 500 is 432 ÷ 500 × 100 = 86.4%. For several subjects, add up all marks obtained and all maximum marks first, then divide.

Percentage change is (new − old) ÷ old × 100. A price that goes from ₹80 to ₹100 has increased by 25%, but going back from ₹100 to ₹80 is a 20% decrease, because the starting value is different. That is why a 50% fall needs a 100% rise to recover.

Adding or subtracting a percentage multiplies by (1 + P ÷ 100) or (1 − P ÷ 100). A 20% discount on ₹2,999 leaves ₹2,999 × 0.8 = ₹2,399.20. Two discounts in a row multiply: 20% off and then another 10% off is 28% off in total, not 30%.

Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate my marks percentage?

Use "X is what % of Y?". Enter your total marks obtained first and the maximum marks second. For example, 432 out of 500 is 86.4%.

How do I calculate a discount?

Use "Add or subtract a percentage", enter the price, choose "minus" and enter the discount percentage. The result is the price you pay, and it also shows how much you save.

Why is a 20% decrease not undone by a 20% increase?

Each percentage is taken from a different starting value. ₹100 minus 20% is ₹80, but ₹80 plus 20% is only ₹96. To get back to ₹100 you need a 25% increase.

How do I convert a percentage to CGPA or the other way round?

Many Indian boards use percentage = CGPA × 9.5. Check your board or university’s rule, because some use a different multiplier.

Can I use decimals and negative numbers?

Yes. All calculators accept decimals and negative numbers. Results are shown to up to four decimal places.
