How to use the Word Counter

  1. Type your text in the box, or paste it from a document, email or website.
  2. Watch the word, character, sentence and paragraph counts update as you type.
  3. Check the reading and speaking time to see how long your text takes to read or present.
  4. Edit until you hit your target length, then copy your text back where you need it.

How words and characters are counted

This word counter updates as you type, so it is handy for essays, assignments, blog posts, social media captions and job applications that have a strict word or character limit. Paste your text into the box and every number refreshes instantly — nothing is sent anywhere, so it is safe to use with private documents.

Words are counted the way a word processor counts them: anything separated by spaces or line breaks that contains a letter or number. Hyphenated words like "well-known", contractions like "don't" and numbers like "1,250.50" each count as one word, and the counter works with Hindi and other languages too.

Characters include letters, numbers, punctuation and spaces, with each emoji counted as one character. Many forms and sites (for example meta descriptions or SMS) limit characters rather than words, so the count without spaces is shown separately.

Sentences end with a full stop, question mark or exclamation mark, and paragraphs are counted as separate lines of text.

Reading time assumes an average silent reading speed of about 238 words per minute, and speaking time assumes about 130 words per minute — a comfortable pace for a speech or presentation. Use these as a guide; your own pace may be a little faster or slower.

Frequently asked questions

Is my text saved or uploaded anywhere?

No. The counting happens entirely in your browser. Your text is never sent to a server and is gone when you close or refresh the page.

Does the character count include spaces?

The "Characters" figure includes spaces and line breaks. The "Characters (no spaces)" figure leaves out all spaces, tabs and line breaks.

How is reading time calculated?

Reading time is your word count divided by 238 words per minute, the average silent reading speed for adults. Speaking time uses 130 words per minute.

Why might my count differ slightly from Microsoft Word or Google Docs?

Each program treats things like dashes, URLs and numbers with symbols a little differently. For normal sentences the counts match; small differences usually come from special characters.

Does it work with Hindi and other languages?

Yes. The counter uses your browser’s built-in language rules, so Hindi, Gujarati, Tamil and most other languages written with spaces between words are counted correctly.
